Valles Mines, Missouri is a small unincorporated community located in Jefferson County. It is situated about 10 miles south of De Soto and about 25 miles south of St. Louis. The town was founded in 1818 and was originally known as “Valle Mines”, named after the nearby lead mines. The town was officially incorporated in 1872 and the name was changed to Valles Mines.
Valles Mines is home to the oldest standing church in Jefferson County, the St. Joachim Catholic Church. The church was built in 1844 and is still in use today. The church is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The town is also home to the oldest standing schoolhouse in Jefferson County. The schoolhouse was built in 1868 and is now used as a museum. It is open to the public and contains artifacts from the town’s history.
